  • $5 fire basket

Altho I put this together for the UDS I'm getting together, it would work for about any charcoal units.

$4 for the pot at the local Salvation Army store and a buck's worth of .25" X 2" bolts and nuts

Yeah, it's a heckuva lot easier to punch those holes thru the stainless!

You might want to consider making those holes larger and more of them. Ash build up might be an issue

Just did a test burn... was not a full load tho. Din't run into ash problems, but it needs more air I think. Was gonna do more holes, but now that you mention it, I'm gonna enlarge the ones I have to like 3/8".

I'd go with 1/2". Some holes on the sides wouldn't hurt either.

RT you gotta take that sucker out back, load the AK with FMJ military ball ammo, and bore your holes the fun way.
If 7.62 mm ain't big enough, Ma Deuce will work better. How much fun would that be?

Hah! I kinda thought about that... durn if I ain't all outta .50 ammo tho. Sooo...just took it up to Marktees' place, with all the metal tools. Drilled out a bunch of half inch holes, and slotted the side with a die grinder and these nifty thin little cutting discs. Took about 2 mins :{)

Oh, and welded the "legs" up so they won't loosen :{)

With your original post I was skeptical Rich, but with the slotted sides I think your on to something here. Stainless steel I feel is strong enough to run those slots much higher up the sides with out the bowl losing the strength to make a fine charcoal basket.

Hmmm probably, Moss. Upon further ponderance, this is gonna end up in the WSM, which needs a new basket. It's not really big enough for the drum. But the theory is what I'm testing I guess. I'll give it a run, and perhaps increase the slots. Do not discount the convection effect tho. Think charcoal chimney...

I tried something similar to that using a ECB water pan. I remember I couldn't get the pit up any higher than 150 but then thought that could be a good thing for certain smokes.
