  • Expanded Metal Grate Material

After looking at various builds that members of this forum have posted, I find that a lot of expanded metal grate material is used for both racks and for charcoal boxes.
Where do you folks find this product and is it very expensive?

I found my expanded metal for my firebasket in my UDS at Home Depot. It's in the hardware section near the plate metal. If you can't find it there, ask one of the workers they should be able to point you to it. I think the biggest they had was 24"x24". Depending on what you wanted to do, you may want to shop around.

I was going to check Grainger too, I think they carry it. I just got it at Home Depot though since I was already there. But the reason I mention it is becasue I think they might have larger cuts.

    What are you building?

Great Question!..... I was just thinking about the same thing for the grates in my CookShack that are starting to rust....

Any welding supply place will have it and so will scrap yards.

Here in Calif. welding supply places carry just welding supplies. A scrap yard or steel company would be your best bet. I get 4'x8' sheets of #9 expanded for $40.00 a sheet which is reasonable to me. #9 is perfect for xtra racks, and charcoal baskets.

If you have any salvage yards in the area, check them out. That is where I find mine. If not, local fabrication shops usually have some drop from other projects, followed by welding shops followed by home improvement stores. Another option is ebay. Several vendors on there selling pre cut sizes and most can trim to suit your needs at no extra charge.

Metal supplier...like Mikey said, about ~ 40 bux for a 4'X8'. They could probably shear it to size for you too, if you need a smaller section.

SO..... If I wanted to replace my semi rusty chrome plated grates..... Should I go get them cut to size out of #9, then season them?..... Should I have edges or a "frame" made for the grates?

It's not really necessary, Scott. The important part is getting the diamonds going from left to right width ways as opposed to front to back. No saggy racks this way.You could "band" them with either 1/4" or 3/8" round stock if you like.

Thanks Mikey...... The racks on my CookShack are only 14" x 14" ...... So I guess either way I used them it would not matter?..... Maybe a "band" would finish them off nicely.... Can you suggest a good way of seasoning them?

Also, can #9 be cut with metal snips?.... Or, I guess I do have a "jig" saw with metal blades, or a Dremel tool that might have something for metal....

They make a "channel" to finish the edges with. If you are going to the metal place to get the stuff, they'll have it.

Clean 'em, grease 'em and heat 'em!

The pic that Richtee is showing appears to be angle iron which will work just fine depending on the size of the opening in your smoker where the racks slide in. Is this for the Cook Shack, Scott? I had mine grit blasted, oiled em and cooked on em.
