  • Freezer in Garage

I know I've seen this topic hashed over here or possibly elsewhere in the past, but thought I would bring it up again. I know many people keep deep freezers in unheated garages and do just fine. I also know there can be a problem in subfreezing temps. The freezer tstat doesn't call for cooling since everything is so cold, so it may not come on even though things get warmer than they should be. Meat can ultimately though, etc. I've heard of warmer kits to allow freezers to work in this environment. Anyone have any success with this or other suggestions? I need another freezer and thats really my only placement option.

I've never had that problem.. Just steer clear of really large HEAVY freezers... I think they're taboo or something..

We had a similar problem with a standard fridge in the outside shed last year... started to thaw out the freezer in FARKEN COLD temps. Then, it warmed up a little, and worked fine. I need to find an answer to this also...

I guess I can't help you with this since my garage has never got below freezing. It is well insulated and drywalled so even if I don't turn on the heater for a few nights, it doesn't freeze anything. I've had two upright freezers in there for over 17 years.

          Mule,
I have two chest freezers in the playhouse next to my shed. No heat, no insulation. One was one I took with me to college that sat on at least three different balconies in Phoenix, probably pushing 25 years old... then another one we picked up when we moved back to CO.. probably pushing 10 years old. We use the hell out of them - packing them in the fall, and then accessing at least three times a week, sometimes more, and have NEVER had any problems.

I worry more about the heat in the summer than the cold in the winter.

I would go for it. Haven't had any experience with upright models.

No, I had to paint the glass black to block any light.

I'm starting to think my garage is freezer hell. They all come to my garage after they die....

This one is pretty heavy too for its size.

We kept a freezer in our gazebo outside for 5 years and never had a problem. There were plenty of times I had to brush snow off the lid when going out there for something. Now that same freezer sits in our shed which is not insulated at all and has ran fine the last 2 years. It is a smaller 7 cubic ft kenmore chest, bought it used and have not had any problems at all - and this is in north dakota temps.

The freezer is complete with the bottom panel. I just can't bring myself to cut into it though. I even have a 100lb propane tank to modify for a fire box and fit underneath where all the guts used to be. Maybe some day, but for now I just ferment in it.

From an HVAC point of view, refrigeration is much more effiecient in warmer dryer enviornments. A heater or warmer kit may be a great option. What you pay in electricity to warm it may be off set by a more efficient freezer. I have installed heat strips on AC compressor units. No reason that they wouldn't work on a freezer compressor. May want to ask a manufacturer about the +/-
