  • Silver Maple good for smokin?

My apprentice just hacked down a huge Silver Maple, 80 some feet tall, split about 40 feet up into 7 trunks. Lots of wood. I am starting to haul it back to Portland each time I head home from work every weekend, at least to use in the fire place. I know maple is good for smoking, but is it any maple that can be used, or just certain types? Silver Maple, what do you think? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I cut down 21 silver maples 2 years ago and have been happily smokin with it for over a year. It's a mild smoke so I usually mix some other wood with it, but it's good on it's own too. I figger I got a lifetime supply.

Yeah...never met a maple I din't like :{) It does seem lighter than say a sugar maple, but it's an enjoyable flavor. Like many maples, it burns fairly quick, so if yer running a stickburner, be sure to have enough.

I agree. Very light in adding aroma/flavor, but a good wood none the less. Only thing I didn't like about it was it burns quickly, unlike oak which holds is embers quite a bit longer. But if you have a boat load of it, its all good. And, if it's free, well then that the best wood there is
