  • My Propane Smoke Shack

I can't find my pictures from last year during the building process so I will have to use what I can find. Basically I was in the need for a big smoker that would hold lots of meat because we make 400 lbs of venison sausage each year and we were sick of having to smoke many many loads in our small rigs. So I found a big crate at work that they were throwing away and figured it would make a great smoker. I braced it up with 2x4's and insulated the inside with that styrofoam that has the foil liner and then covered the inside of the smoker with some tin I found at work as well. I then covered the outside of the smoker with tongue and groove to give it a nice finished look. Here are some pictures of the smoker.

Here is a bad picture but these are the racks. They are old stainless steel shelves that I picked up used at the hardware store bargin cave. I just cut them to size and they work great.

I found some pictures of the build.

Here is the crate after it was reinforced with 2x4's

    Insulation being added.

Getting the siding all finished up.

Outside all finished. I had to add more hinges as the door was heavy has heck. I also had to add fence gate caster at the bottom of the door to help with the weight.

    Inside shot.

    Another shot of the inside.

I use a turkey fryer burner to heat the smoker. And with the smokers size I normally don't need to use the needle valve at all but if I am smoking under 180 or so then sometimes I may need to tweak the temps with the needle valve.
My original thought was to make this movable so I could bring it with me to different events such as my family reunion and our sausage making day. but after all the crap that was put into it there is no way it can be moved. It took four guys just to set it upright. Let just say our sausage making gets done at my place now. haha Thanks for looking at my build.

I like it< i was talking with my wife yesterday, about building one that I could keep in the garage, and vent it outside, I'd have to use an electric hot plate I'd imagine, what are the dimensions? I was thinking about going 6' high by 2' foot deep and 2' wide.

If I had to guess on the dimension off the top of my head I would say it is 8.5ft tall and the inside is around 3 ft deep by 3 ft wide.

The needle valve is spliced in-line on my propane hose between the regulator and the burner. Its used to control the flow of gas before it hits the burner so you can regulate the heat lower than what you can on the stock regulator.
