The gray one is the fastest...

Thermopens are a british product actually made in the uk (wonders will never cease).
And if you buy one in the uk it comes - apparently - as a centigrade only model.

The instructions make no reference to fahrenheit at all.

However, it does show you four little switches inside the battery compartment. with switch 1 listed as 'not used'

I moved switch one - and lo and behold it reads in fahrenheit :-)

Now why don't they want people to know that

        Hmmm...

Interesting... I have last year's non-splashproof model, and it doesn't have any of the switches you refer to. Maybe they don't come with the exported models...?

What are the other 3 switches for?

BTW, the ORANGE one is still the fastest...

hang on I'll get the 'manual'

The only reason i use fahrenheit is beacuse you lot do and it's only for food temps.

No way on earth would I ever voluntarily choose to use such a bizarre cockeyed temperature measurement system :-)

According to an article Fahrenheit wrote in 1724,[6] he based his scale on two reference points of temperature.[7] The zero point is determined by placing the thermometer in brine: he used a mixture of ice, water, and ammonium chloride, a salt. This is a frigorific mixture which automatically stabilizes its temperature at 0 °F. (A mixture of ice and water also stabilizes, either freezing or melting at 32 °F though Fahrenheit did not use this point in defining his temperature scale). The second point, 100 degrees, was the level of the liquid in the thermometer when held in the mouth or under the armpit of his wife — subsequent refinements. Fahrenheit noted that, using this scale, water boils at about 212 degrees.[7]
Yep that's definitely a logical and scientific way of determining 100 degrees: - how warm is your wife's mouth.

Obviously compared to the utterly bonkers system where 0 is the point water freezes and 100 is the point where it boils, I can see why people would use fahrenheit

Thanks CA... funny, mine doesn't look a thing like that in the battery area. Mine doesn't use a disc type battery, it uses a cylindrical type, smaller than an AAA, and not a switch in sight...
