  • Auber Instruments Temp Controller Trial Run on the Weber Smokey Mountain

Finally got a chance to try out the new temp control on the WSM. All I can say is, not being used to a temp controller on a smoker... I was really impressed!

I closed two vents totally, but the front vent I left open to install the blower in the lower hole. It installs quickly and easily... just snaps in place. They supply you with aluminum tape to plug up holes, which I did with the two remaining vent holes above the blower.

I set up the coal basket with a layer of Stubbs briqs, but left a hole at one edge. Lit about 10 or 12 briqs, placed them in the hole... the hole/lit briqs were inline with the blower unit.

I let the WSM sit and watched the temps rise before I turned on the unit. It got to 218, then started backing down. I turned on the unit... I had set the target temp for 240 at first. it got there in no time... and stayed there within 2 degrees, until I decided to jack it up to 275. It got there in about 10 minutes, and stayed there. Wow... this chit really works!!

Here's a couple shots of the mess in place...

So far, I like it! I cooked the fatty in a previous post with this unit fired up.

    Thanks for looking!

Due to the curvature of the WSM, and the flatness of the mounting surface of the blower, it's not totally sealed, but it is close enough. The unit snaps in place with a spring and is very sturdy.

nice post, Ill be following how you like this item.

I am pretty low tech as far as bbq goes, but these fan devices are interesting.
Just because you welded some shit together doesnt make it a WSM.
