  • Don't FLAME me for asking.. but...

I have the most incredible niece on the planet... seriously one great woman.
Anyhow she became a "vegan" like in high school, she is 24 now. She is a graduate from Azuza Pacific University (Christian college) she has gone on several missionary trips for the good of others.. she is just a great kid. She mentioned that the one thing she misses is of course bacon.
So I got to thinking, could you cure a hunk of tofu? then perhaps cold smoke it a bit?
You all think I have gone mad now right? Help?? (be nice)

The curing portion is over my head, so I can't help you there. But as far as smoking tofu, it can be done. I have just sliced it to about 3/8-1/2" slices, and applied rib rub. Unfortunately, for my sake, they still taste like tofu, but if you like that sort of thing, maybe it would work.

Good luck, and I think you are doing a good thing (I'd say maybe we can win her back, but I suppose I can try to support someone else's healthy life change)

Vegan bacon... who would've thought... but anyway, might be worth a shot, especially if you put it on the smoker.

I have just one question if anyone can answer it. If someone decides they don't like meat and are only going to eat veggies, why do they want to eat something that tastes like meat?

No need for cure, BBQ. It's not gonna affect it other than add nitrates and salt that do nothing beneficial.

I suppose ya can smoke it...and fry it up in veggie oil. But you din't hear that from me. Po' kid... ;{)

Vegetarian..... Com'n Bbqgoddess; convince her it is mad cow disease (refer to - http://www.smoked-meat.com/forum/sho...php?t=1379)she is suffering from and bring her back to meat. Bacon would be a great starter for her.

well nothing on bacon but here is a recipe for tofu jerky.....
just do it in the smoker instead of the oven....might be good

                            Original Tofu Jerky Recipe
                            July 11th, 2008

                            Ingredients;

■1 (14 ounce) package firm tofu, drained
                            ■3 Tb. barbecue sauce
                            ■3 Tb. soy sauce
                            ■1/4 tsp. liquid smoke flavoring
                            ■1/2 tsp. pepper
                            ■1 tsp. garlic powder
                            ■2 tsp. maple syrup
                            ■2 tsp. brown sugar
                            Directions:

1.Place tofu block between paper towels on a plate. Set another plate on top, and put a weight on top of the plate such as a can to press the water from the block of tofu while you prepare the sauce.
2.In a medium bowl, stir together the soy sauce, maple syrup, liquid smoke, garlic powder, black pepper, barbeque sauce and brown sugar until smooth.
3.Slice tofu into 1/4 inch thick slices, and dip them in the sauce to coat. Place in a tightly sealed container. Place in the refrigerator, and let marinate for one to two hours.
4.Preheat the oven to the lowest temperature, around 200 degrees F (95 degrees C). Line the oven rack with heavy duty aluminum foil, and place in the lowest position of the oven. Place the tofu slices on the foil.
5.Bake for about 8 hours, checking and turning over tofu slices every few hours. Tofu jerky is done when it is hard and uniformly dark in color.

I don't think I would bother with the curing but a good marinade then smoking would work nicely. Tofu can be very tasty if used right.

If she hasn't tried seitan make sure she does. Its a wheat gluten product that will fool any meat eater. I was fooled by it and have seen at least 10 others fooled by it. Very tasty stuff.
