I am close to a good dippin spot. Haven't been in years. I once tried to make some mock sardines with them about 20 years ago.............they were just ok.

Man, I haven't been up to Singing Bridge dipping in a whole bunch of years. A bunch of us used to go up, dip all night until we got a 50 gallon drum full then come back and sit & snip until they were all cleaned and bagged to divvy up and freeze. Those were some mighty drunk times. We actually called it "going up smelt drinking".
The last time I was up dipping I started dipping out at the top of my waders and worked my way backwards back to the shore and I tripped over something. Turns out that it was an old lady who had fallen and her waders were full of water and she was under water. I pulled her back to shore where a group of people had a campfire going and they took her, pumped the water from her lungs and got her breathing again. She was actually part of their group and they hadn't missed her yet.

I used to buy smelt in the freezer case here is Colorado. It was 29 cents a pound then. Damn people wised up and started raising the price, so haven't had any in probably 25 years. I'd love to watch folks dip smelt and I'd help clean them.

Great story about the weighted wader lady. Good thing you stumbled across her. I thought it was gonna be the story of throwin one back because one smelt

Great story... I have spent a lot of nights at the Singing Bridge dipping smelt as well as the fall trout spawn. The smelt don't run as heavy up here in Northern Michigan like they use to.

I remember some of my Dads friends talking about going "smelting" when I was a kid, back when they used to have a run on the Lester north of Duluth. He went once with them, left in a Suburban with 4 guys, 4 cases of beer and one net. Came back with the net.
