Indeed. Those guys are tough competition every time. Also great guys, and good motovation :{)

Bubba did not cook...he held out for a judging position. Also, Being an employee for Lockharts (Major sponsor/beverage supplier) he announced the winners, and his first comment was "Tell you what..there was ALOT of great BBQ turned in!"

That is a good thing to hear for all that competed

They are seasoned BBQ team and they didn't want to spend the night outside on Friday, so they opted to get a motel and sleep warm and dry, and just cook chicken and ribs. It was great having them along to be part of the event. I was glad they were only cooking the quicker foods! They were GC last year.

This event is where it all started for Richtee and myself. We first met here with the intentions of cooking together. He and I became good friends on the SMF site and agreed to give it a shot back in 2007. We met up at Eagle for the very first face to face. His brother had a trailer. Marktee and his son joined the efforts of our first rag tag team," Three men and a Butt". We didn't have a frickin clue. We partied like animals, and tried to sneak in some tips and techniques from the seasoned veterans. Teams like Smokin Scotsmen, Pork of the north, All day smoke, Extreme Roasters, and a few more I fail to remember right now, all gave us some good advise. We failed to turn in chicken, but managed to get the other three meats in and we had a good time. We got to meet Bubba, and Crewdog, Spyder mike ( GLBBQ president) all for the first time. We even managed our very first ribbon, a 2nd place in ribs. I still remember it like it was yesterday. Mark, Rich, Glen and I inside the trailer huddled around a pile of pork spares trying to figure out what to do with them. We sampled each rack, and then picked our best 6 bones and applied the sauce to each rib( all four sides hehehehe) turned them on their sides to show off the smoke ring, and sent them in. Man I was so nervous. When they announced our name for the ribs, I could have floated over all the people to get the ribbon.

From that time forward we were hooked. I had also made allot of new BBQ friends, and best of all, I made a huge bond with one of my best friends, Rich. I will treasure his friendship, knowledge, sense of humor and love till my last days on earth.

So my point in all this, This early season practice comp is a great way to shake off the winter blues, meet some great folks, help newbies learn the art, and party with old friends on an annual basis. It's just good fun, and great times. The food is always top shelf, and we eat lots of it. Thanks to the GLBBQA for organizing and managing this event annually. I hope to make it every year to cook, judge, or party, or help.It has become a spring ritual for me and many of the other GLBBQA members.
