Sorry john. My internet got screwed up and it didn't post what I had typed. If you look at the bottom of the page, it has that exact quote in the Q-Reply box. I had about 3 paragraphs typed, but now that I'm using my phone, I'll make it short and sweet...

It can be done... this is exactly how I started in smoking. I used a large piece of 16 gauge steel bent into a "U" over my coals, added some wood, and it worked.

Air control will be your biggest issue. I assume you have a propane grill based on your previous posts. The reason your SS smoke box wasn't smoking is because the wood wasn't. Getting hot enough. For cold smoking, some people will shove a soldering iron into the wood chips and that helps. Others will light a couple pieces on fire, and let them smolder in the remaining pile. I will take a pile of wood chips, and light a piece of charcoal or two and palce them on top of the wood. It's just enough heat to make the wood smoke, but not enough to significantly raise the temps of the smoker.

Do you have a welder? Mechanical abilities? I have seen some very creative smokers before... if people can turn fridges, file cabinets, and burn barrels into fully functional, relatively high-end smokers, you can surely use a grill... it's just a question of exactly how much time, effort, and money you will need to put into it.

If you have any pictures of your grill as it sits, it would be more than helpful.

                  Later,
                  Andy

This will work OK, but not do a great job on doing long smokes.. Pics of what your dealing with would be very helpful..

Are you working with a old charcoal grill??

visual smoke is not alway an indication of amoking. it you smell the pleasing aroma wood burnin', you be smokin' there are lots of way to smoke using grills. thats why i was asking for a picture of the grill that you are attempting to convert.

                      take care

John, I'm working on my build now. You're welcome to check out my thread
                            here: http://www.smoked-meat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14776

I've had 4 inch rain days till about a week ago and it's been near 100 degrees
each day since. So I've not been banging on it much lately. If you could get some 10" duct work, an A-Collar to fit (this is commercial stuff and heavy)
and hit some scrap yards you could probably put something together like it
                            for cheap.

                            Good luck with your build.
