Here's something that does a great job of quenching a thirst on a hot summer day. Since we're headed in that direction, I figured I post it although it competes with a good cold beer

I got this from my grandfather who got it from his father when they rasied cattle in upstate NY. So this goes back to late 1800's, early 1900's.

If you like vinegar, this is excellent. I started drinking it when I was a kid...maybe that's why I love vinegar:

½ cup of molasses - optional
    1 cup of sugar
    ½ cup of vinegar
    ½ tsp ginger
    2 cups of hot water
    Chill

There's an Italian cooler made with tamrind extract that to me MUST be similar. No vinegar, but it's tart on it' own... VERY intersting!

Never heard of this. I do apple cider vinegar straight or pickle juice. Man I sleep good & calms my arthritis. I will do this concoction!

Mix in 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and stand back. Instant carbonation!

I hear a Mentos is a bottle of Coke or Pepsi tastes really good to. Give that a shot and let me know what you think

My extremely hillbilly neighbor (he's dead now) gave me a recipe very similar when I first moved out here. Said the oatmeal gave it "body." And he also said it was good warmed up with a bit of bourbon, kind of like a hot toddy. His wife says it's better if left over night in the fridge, to drink the next day.

                  1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
                  1/2 cup sugar or honey
                  1/4 cup molasses
                  1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
                  1/2 gal water
                  1/2 cup oatmeal (optional)

I never tried it because it doesn't sound like something I might like. 99% percent of what I drink is just water. So if any of you guys try either of these recipes, report back and let us know what they are like.

Pete, I tried your recipe (didn't add the molasses) and I love it!

I mixed it all in a quart canning jar, gave it a good shake and let it chill overnight.

It's really tasty and refreshing. Thanks so much for another winning recipe. Cheers!

sounds like it may have some medical use's if you add Rum to it. will have to give it a try. I have a jar of black strap mollase's in the pantry. and some dark jamacin rum.

Which, coincidentally happens to be loaded with molasses.

interesting bunch of recipes - not sue about the oatmeal in gunny's recipe - don't like drinks with bits in :-)

But definitely try this at some point :-)
