  • First Wood

    Hi folks,

Today I went out and bought my first pile of hardwood for my Chargriller Pro.

I have a garden center not far from me and the guy had one half of a face cord of mixed Oak, Maple and a bit of Birch.

A face cord of wood around here goes for $250.00.

He gave this to me for $45 because he needed the space to put other things.

He also sold me 6 bags of the same wood about 50 lbs each for $40.

I think I got a good deal, it looks great and nice and dry.

Now all I need is for people to help me learn how to use this thing.

So far all your tips have been great.

    Thanks

are you set up to preburn? I have tried to just burn wood in my CGSP and got a really crappy creosotey taste. I have heard that it is because the size of the SFB does not allow fire to get hot enough to get rid of the nasties in the wood. Another thing you could do is chunk some of it up and make charcoal out of the rest of it using a furnace and retort. here is a link on making charcoal http://www.velvitoil.com/Charmake.htm

On Edit: Preburning is fairly simple, get a barrel with the top cut out of it and cut a hole in the side of it on the bottom to scoop out coals, stick some rebar through the barrel to make a grate for the wood to set on while it burns just above the hole. Put the wood in there, light on fire, and let it turn into charcoals and shovel it into the sfb.

Sounds like a good deal. Just ask away. There's quite few with the same set-up. I'll throw in my .02 if I can help.

Hate to tell ya but a CG isin't really a stick burner.

If you insist on burning wood, i'd go the pre-burn route.

                I can't believe i just said that......Rich!

It's not a stick burner -- despite what the manual may say.

You are better off using lump unless you preburn like smokin365 describes.

Here's something I'd like to see.

Get the product engineers, or whoever is responsible for marketing those smokers the way they are, and the people who wrote the manuals together for a gathering.

Have them smoke something on their stock, out-of-the-box, unmodded smokers following the instructions that they provide . . .

and then make them eat what they smoked.

I'm gonna move this to the Charcoal forum, as that's not really a stick burning unit. You CAN preburn, as mentioned, but it's not a stickburner in the true sense. Got ya some good wood for sure tho!
