  • Weber Ranch? Yeah, Right!!!

Didn't know where to put this, so it's here until someone moves it.
Has anyone seen the Weber Ranch grill? Quite a piece of equipment if I do say so myself. But at 1200 to 1440 bucks.....................I don't think so.
So here is my new project. I was going to post this when I get it finished, but I thought some of you may be interested in following the build.
It doesn't look very big in the pic, but it is 4 feet in diameter.
I plan to cut this in half, and fabricate everything including the grates. It will be towable with a telescopic tongue. The lid will be hinged and I will use a weight or something to help with opening the heavy lid.
I have folks over a lot, especially my very large family, and I need 2 or 3 grills to accommodate the food. I'd say this will fill the bill.
    Any suggestions? Feel free.

        what a humptydumpty pit

OHHH TOM....Now if you were here in La. We could make a nice bbq pit/ smoker from this FOR SUREEEE. Could make the grill to rotate. Two doors to make them not so heavy, they would be light to open maybe??? No ex. weights to help open the doors.... YOU GOT MY WHEELS A TURNING....LOL

gunny where are you putting the firebox on this thing? What was it in its original life? Might contact Uncle Honky and see what his ideas might be. I think the telescopic tongue is a good idea. How much does that puppy weigh anyhow? On a lid that has got to be as heavy as that looks I think counter weights are the only way to go. Unless you plan on a hoist or awfully strong wind to help ya out. Catch a finger in there and you might get a smoked supper surprise. Gotta be a great stick burner when ya getter done.

No firebox. Just a huge kettle grill.
It was a propane tank. I have no idea why people had these instead of the horizontal tanks, but there seems to be quite a few of these cannonball type tanks around.

I'm guessing higher pressure in a smaller volume tank.
Being a sphere it'd probably take a much higher pressure than the cylindrical tanks.
                    Just a thought.

You might be on to something there. Wall thickness is 3/8 where I believe most others are 1/4 or even thinner. But I really have no idea about LPG anyway. What I do know about it is I hate paying for it to heat my house. I guess that's why I chop so much wood. Gotta feed a stove and a smoker.
