Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone out there mixes lump and briquettes.I have a cabinet smoker(vault clone) and has 2" insulated walls and I have found that lump burns too hot for most cooks(right on the border of 260 degrees F) and briquettes are slow starting and dont burn as long but easier to regulate in my cooker. so why not mix them? does anyone do this and if so what are your ratios 75/25 50/50 ?

Only if I'm running out of lump. I do put some briquettes in the bottom of the chimney to keep the small bit of lump from fall out (on my feet).

Sometimes I think that the briqs light faster than the lump...some times I think that can cause temps to spike a bit...

So I burn wood instead...:thumb:

i do it sometimes if it's a very long cook like a big butt or brisket.
i mix 50/50 & get the lump going first then i'll add 5-10 briquettes & a chunk of wood about every hour after temps stabilize.

Wu-Tangs' bro-in-law-in-law (inside joke) does it in his drum and doesn't have any issues with it. pretty consistent and easy to control. i thin he does baout 50/50 or 75 briquettes, 25 lump... depends on teh situation, what's on the smoker, cost, etc.

Later,
Andy
