  • Firebox on a cabinet smoker

How would I go about figuring out the size of a firebox on a cabinet smoker? Is there some kind of ratio? I'm kinda stuck in my design process with it. My plan is to have 5-16"x20"x1" racks spaced about 4 inches or so apart with the bottom most rack sitting about an inch over the water pan, and a 4 inch gap between the top rack and the inner lid.

What ratio do you speak of??

This is the calculator I used to make my smoker. It says typically the firebox is 1/3 the size of the smoker.

No problem. I followed it to the T and if I wanted it to, my smoker can hold 350° with a medium sized fire.

You might be messing with some type of baffle to even out heat/smoke flow with that direct path to the other side of the cab...

why do you want a water pan in cabinet with a sfb ?
just seems pointless - you could get another shelf in there

Well, I think I've finally come up with a plan. The only thing I haven't decided on is if I want recessed doors or not.

4" apart... so you've got two good shelves...? Mine is almost 4' high, I've got 4 shelves, and have to drop the two middle ones on a regular basis..

I that would work for ribs, but I say go big or go home! Any way to get another foot in there somewhere if you're going to all that work?
