  • couple of twins born

Well, I signed up to smoke 10 butts to help with an Easter feed at our church and needed more cook space. So, the Oklahoma Chapter of the Michigan Drum Corps has now expanded. I did not get creative. I just followed the sticky here by Bubba, one for no-weld UDS over at the Brethren and one at the TQJ.

They are not complete but they did it okay in an all-nighter. (will post those pics in another thread) My Dad helped me.

Got two drums from a place in OKC.

I have a donor Kingsford 22.5" grill but I do not think it will work. Your thoughts to make it work would appreciated.

It just is not big enough. We thought we could but top off and it would be close.

Here is the lid fit up to the Illini Drum just for reference.

Don't waste yer money on this. I fried it on the 2nd hole. ($10)

Hand to spend $30 to buy this one and use a real plug-in drill my Dad has. (25 yrs old)

Other tools in the garage. (I do not have printer hooked up in the house yet. This worked better anyways)

Air intake installation per Brethren link...

We spaced them equally by calculating the circumference of the drum (2*3.14*Radius - see this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumference)
~ 72" - we then divided by 3 to place one every 24" around the circumference of the drum. I saw someone use a template, too.

    A helper was nearby...

We used some leftover shelf boards to make the shelves. A little big but that is ok. I actually have not made the charcoal baskets yet. I had to borrow two from SmokyOkie as I did not plan ahead enough time to get the expanded metal. I will follow Bubba's no weld charcoal basket for that.

Being seasoned. The Illini Drum has 4 butts on it already here.

Thanks for the info you all have posted up to make this easy to follow.

Thanks. Agree on the Grace rec'd Capt. The boy is 6 months old and not really sleeping thru the night yet. (ouch)

I will miss yall at the practice cook as I learned a lot last year.

I have been quite busy at the client (50+ a week) and happy to be busy these days.

Kel, Thanks! We feel blessed but we question our sanity at times. The two older ones are doing great with him.

As my bball coaching (I coached in Detroit about 15 yrs ago) buddies told me when they heard about the 3rd boy.... 'You gotta go ZONE now... that is no good.' We were all man-to-man Defense where I coached.

Well I gotta tell ya, they may not be complete but they sure do look good. That little helper in there is a big plus.

Okay, on the donor grill. Probably gonna have to make a reducer lip. Baxk to the welding shop for some good metal. Either take the drum or measure good, they'll cut it for you. They will charge a little extra, but the wear and tear on their tools and body (sheet metal is sharp, trust me, I have the scars) plus the time it saves will be worth it. Then that top will fit right on there just as you like it.

Who needs a printer when you have a laptop with a wireless card anyhow. The pics and graphics look better on the screen than paper.

Shelves don't look to big to me. Never have enough work space anyhow. After the baskets are made, paint of your choice and maybe some stain on the shelves, a dolley with some wheels and your done.

Good thoughts. I have some expert welders at work so I can probably trade some 'Que and a few $$ to have them mod the donor grill so it will work.

I thought I might try to use the thoughts on this blog for the wheels. We will see.
