Do ya think burnin' pellets on top of charcoal in a UDS is a good idea?

  • #2
Try it...but all the UDS guys I know use chunks.

Usually wood chunks are put on the sides to avoid ash choke.

Pellets on top might add to this problem.

I probably wood knot as it might go against the grain & you could be barking up the wrong tree if you get board & try to branch out to do it. I guess I'll lumber back to my smoker now.

Could you be a little more plane with your wood-be explanation?

I wood be afraid they would burn hotter than the coals and burn off. Maybe put them off to the side so they smolder.

I guess it would depend on what you are trying to achieve.

If you are using pellets for heat, I would not think so.

If you are using pellets for "flavor" smoke, I can't imagine it would hurt anything. But if you put them on top, I don't think they will last long.

I've never used pellets before but my guess would be if you layered them in with layers of charcoal as you loaded up your charcoal basket, it might work rather well.

In fact, I may have to try it some time.

Well, now that I've had a few to think it over...I was kinda thinkin along the lines of a smoke box or a homemade smoke generator. Anyone ever use a generator with a UDS?

You mean like a SmokePistol or an A-MAZE-N-SMOKER?

Not that I am aware of.

                      Doesn't mean you couldn't though.

wouldn't it be a bit more expensive than chunks and not last near as long?
i thought about buying one of those variety boxes of pucks from Gander mountain for my brinkman box smoker until i saw the price and considering i have 6 of the 8 flavors on the back 40 already.

Is there a reason you don't want to use chunks or chips in the UDS? I with the other guys and would think they would burn up pretty fast if they were placed directly on the coals. You could maybe put them in some kind of container or tinfoil balls or something. I'm just trying to think out loud.

Yeah, I was kinda thinkin along those lines, was browsing youtube and saw a few different homemade jobbies that looked interesting as well as the smoke daddy.

The last one looks the most promising for a homemade clone I think. I'll have to dig around the shop to see if I have any sort of spare parts from old jobs.
