I probably wood knot as it might go against the grain & you could be barking up the wrong tree if you get board & try to branch out to do it. I guess I'll lumber back to my smoker now.MES 30"

I wood be afraid they would burn hotter than the coals and burn off. Maybe put them off to the side so they smolder.Mark

If you are using pellets for heat, I would not think so.
If you are using pellets for "flavor" smoke, I can't imagine it would hurt anything. But if you put them on top, I don't think they will last long.
I've never used pellets before but my guess would be if you layered them in with layers of charcoal as you loaded up your charcoal basket, it might work rather well.
In fact, I may have to try it some time.

Not that I am aware of.
Doesn't mean you couldn't though.

Is there a reason you don't want to use chunks or chips in the UDS? I with the other guys and would think they would burn up pretty fast if they were placed directly on the coals. You could maybe put them in some kind of container or tinfoil balls or something. I'm just trying to think out loud.Propane Smoke Shack

The last one looks the most promising for a homemade clone I think. I'll have to dig around the shop to see if I have any sort of spare parts from old jobs.
