Is that a one piece drum? Ifin so, that lid ain't comin off without a saw, a grinder er an air chisel! It could be made ta work, but the best drum fer a uds is one with a banded lid.

If this be one, (can't really tell from the pics) it should have a bolt an nut holdin the band er a snap latch holdin the band an lid on.

Looks like a crimped on lid. Need a grinder..take the top bead right down to the underlying metal under the crimp. Poof... off comes the lid.

They make a tool for cutting the lids off of drums like that from the top side. I have one. If you find somebody with one.... it takes about 5 minutes to cut that lid out.
        Here is one.

Wooo an industrial can opener! Cool!

By grinding the bead tho...you'll have a lid that will work. I dunno, but I think this tool will cut it undersized?

looks like a crimped on lid with a band going around the circumfrence. a die grinder to just cut thu the band in one spot and should come apart. they have them here stateside like that but usually they have a bolt in the band so if you remove bolt the band comes off and is reusable... if i had one here i would take a pic for you

it's had synthetic engine oil in it - you can see te residue in the inside the drum picture.
And the suggestion that I'd be better off with a banded lid drum - is appreciated, but this is what I got and what I can get whenever I like, so this is waht I'm going to use.

At the moment we're looking at cutting the top off about an inch below the rim and then removing a couple of small triangles from the lip of the drum and bending that inwards so that the cut lid will sit over the lip and make a decent seal.

Looks like I can get welding done by one of the boys at the garage as well :-)
Just wondering whether I can cut the lid off with a jigsaw or whether i'll have to use the angle grinder - but again: sparks/motor oil - not a great combination :-)

A power wash with some detergent should take care of that. And like I mentioned, if you grind off the top/outside of the bead, your lid will fit.

                        Sounds plausible.

If you cut the barel below the lip, you'll lose all the rigidity from the lip and have an out of round drum.
If you can get several of these, cut out the lid inside the band and then cut off another barrel and make a top from that. This way you'll have room to add another grate also!
I'll try to find some pics for ya.
