  • Mr. Bubba, May I join the drum corp

I'm not completely finished with my drum. I still have a couple handles to find, bottle opener, and think I'm going to have my talented Graffiti artist son get creative. But I've done a test smoke with a few fatties last weekend. Today am planning a small cookout with some friends. (damn rain might be getting in the way). smoking some burgers, beans.

I let the drum go for about 7 hrs before shutter her down. Can't believe how efficient this thing is with the fuel. I could easily have gotten 16 hrs of burn time with it.

Started with a new 55 gal drum

the surface rust inside was an easy fix.

The grate bolts are a bit different.

Not the best shot of the charcoal basket. used and 18" cooking grate for the bottom, expanded metal and some bolts on the bottom for legs

This is the rack that I'll have directly over the charcoal basket.

    lower cooking rack

    and top cooking rack

Not really sure if a water pan is necessary but I picked up a stainless steel mixing bowl anyways. it's about 15" in diameter and pretty deep.

Ok, so you HAD to know that I'd go with RED for the main color of this thing. But like I said, I'm thinking of having my son do some graffiti type painting to this. BBQ themed of some sorts.

So Bubba, can I come in?

Tip, This actually will be one of the questions I'll be popping out soon myself. But I don't think it will be necessary for most smokes. In fact it really held back the heat and I had to go with 2 wide open air intakes and a 3rd for a little while.
For Burgers it was perfect. I gave me plenty of time a little over 2 hrs for the burgers. Cooked slow enough to really pick up a great smoke flavor.
But for Butts or Brisket, I'm thinking it would not be such a good idea.

Any experienced Drum Heads out there wanna pipe in on the use of a water bowl in a UDS.

still waiting on Bubba to accept me into the drum corp

                              Heck ya Kev.
                              Welcome to the Drum Corps!

Good looking unit! The water pan is useless IMO but i have tried a large clay saucer (dry) for a heat deflector and it seemed to really change the way a drum works, in a negative way.
Takes forever to come to temp, burns more fuel in doing so, etc.
Play around with it and let us know what you think but i think you'll be quite pleased with your cooker!

                              Brisky time!
