  • Mead beer wine ?

Has anyone here tried homebrewing it ?
I've been wanting to try homebrewing and thought I'd try this . It wont be now but down the road just want to get some input on it. The sweetness of the honey is what appeals to me. Would you do wine or beer mead if it were you? I was thinking of doing both wine and beer because the wife wants wine and I want beer she told me get the capper and corker along with the kit.
I was looking at this kit first : http://www.mainbrew.com/pages/starte...adstarter.html
Then I saw this one on Leeners http://www.leeners.com/mead/store/starter-kits.shtml
What else would I need? I know I would need bottles where could I get them cheap. Anything else?
    Thanks in advance

Give Meat Hunter a PM. He's been home brewing for a long time and helped me out a bunch.

I have not tried it yet...but I am thinking about it. There is a meadery just a mile from my house and they make up some great stuff... and not all of it is sweet.

Some is dry, semi sweet and very sweet.

I think it depends on the type of yeast used. or maybe one is carbonated and the other not? No idea on that one.

I know my brother made some mead quite a few years ago, but I have no idea how he made it. We were big into homebrew at that time, so I'd guess it was "beer" mead. All I remember is it was on the dry side of things, a little too much for my taste, but it was pretty good otherwise.

This is from the first website I listed.

This kit is geared for the mead-maker that wants to brew five gallons of mead at a time, and has no other beer or winemaking equipment. It comes with a choice of corker, or capper, depending upon whether or not you want to have your mead still, like a wine, or sparkling, like a beer or champagne. Please specify when ordering.

Sounds like it's how ya cap or cork it.

Capping or corking has to do with the pressures it'll be under. If you make it sparkling it has to handle the pressure.
If this is where you got the beer vs wine question, it's the same stuff, just carbonated or non carbonated. And that is a function of the fermenting/bottling process. I'll leave it to others more knowledgeable to explain the process.

I guess I hve never had sparkling (carb'd) mead..it's always been "corked" like a fine sherry...I love the stuff... expensive tho.
