FWIW, my buddy just bought one.
His In Law made him some ribs that were evidently to die for and he bought one too.
His In Law only has had it two weeks.

I was gonna ask here about mods, tips etc.

I've seen a few threads over time at other places asking about this cooker. The only thing constant is that they burn A Lot of charcoal. I don't think I've ever seen someone who is a traditional smoker use one. Therefore, very tough to get a butt to butt comparison :bounce:

I know they are fast so I would figure they would be good for leaner, more tender meats. I think thye get used more as a grill replacement than a smoker replacement. I would love to hear how a butt or a brisket does in one.

The last think is that the charcoal actually sits "outside" the cooker in a ring. That has to be a reason it burns faster with all the oxygen. However, it would be a safety concern for me, kids, dogs, and any flamable material that may be around.

Personally, I'll just stick with what I have and what I know.

this cooker was discussed in a thread at smurf..........our local newpaper did a article on it.........Smokebuzz knows the dude, the article was about......so he may have some insite on it...........

but like what was said before...........to me its a COOKER, not a smoker.........faster sometimes is NOT better.........i like to keep it low and slow.......what the hobby/life is about..........and its a bit pricey also isn't it?

Ableman is correct.
My buddy told me it takes 15 POUNDS of charcoal each time, plus the wood.

I just purchased one off Fargo's Craigslist for $40, looks like an interesting, easy way to cook (smoke?) while camping and not have to babysit the grill. My mother is picking it up for me and my son will be out to visit in about 3 weeks, so I will not get to try it out till then. I told my father in law to feel free to try it out!

I like it. It's a horse of a different color. Does put out some good food in a hurry. Check out my thread.

I have done ribs, chicken, and a fattie. You can put wood chip inside around the water pan, which works pretty good. It's a convection type cooker, meat stay nice and moist so it not really a smoker. It's another tool in my mess of cookers.:thumb:
