  • picked up a drum

got this drum off craigslist, couldnt pass it up! Its gonna be a slow build Im not in any hurry to get it done as Im still learning and playing with my brinkmann.
22 1/2 inch inside diameter about 23 1/4 outside, anybody know if thats the right size for a good fit with a weber lid? Theres no liner, but it is painted inside so should I take a wire wheel to it to get the paint off the inside before I burn it out or will burning it get most of that out? Like I said gonna be a slow build but Ill keep it documented as I go. Thanks in advance for all the help I know get from everybody here as I build!!

It's possible that a weber lid might fit. Most times though you would need to pound on the ring that holds the lid to make it fit. Once you get this done you might want to sell the brinkman. Good luck and let us see more pics as you complete the project.

burning should do the trick, weber lid will not fit, unless you weld the top 3 in. of the weber bottom inside the barrel

That sounds like the diameter of the drum I did a while back. Weber lid did not fit on mine. I was still able to use it though but took some fab work.

What I did with mine was to use the original drum lid. I set the weber lid on top of it and and fit snug into it. I then welded the weber lid to the drum lid, flipped it over and cut the bottom of the drum lid out and used the original drum ring. Fits like a champ.

That build is on here if your interested in lookin at it.

Thanks guys I'll probably just stick with the lid it came with for now unless I happen to find a great deal on a weber. I don't have a welder or any of that stuff so gotta keep it simple!

In that case, here is my "no weld Weber lid UDS mod".

Here's a "no weld" mod that requires a donor kettle bottom and was a real PITA.

            No weld charcoal basket.

I don't have a welder either. This UDS was completely no weld.

            Hope it helps.

Do you have your Weber lid yet? If so, try turning your drum upside down and see if the lid fits the bottom. Most top rims are rolled making them wider, but the bottoms are flat crimped. I just made my top lid, the bottom of my smoker and cut the bottom out using a sabre saw then ground it smooth with an angle grinder. A little tapping on the bottom lip with a hammer brought it to just the right size for my Weber lid.

I dont have one so Im thinking for now Im just gonna plan on using the flat lid unless a weber comes along for cheap

If you have any metal pickers in your area, Stop one or two and have them keep their eyes out for lids for you. I did and had to tell the guy to stop bringing them after he brought me about 10 lids.
