  • The most pimped out mini UD/TS on the Western Slope... maybe anywhere!!

I've read a lot about UDS's and love to build stuff, so 14 PM's with DDave later... this is what me and Bassman came up with - the TPUD/TS, Totally Pimped Ugly Drum/Tri-Tip Smoker!

Started out with a 30 gallon barrel and burnt dat be-otch up!!

Then it was on to the build. Keith was just getting cranky and complacent with the O'l Smoke Vault. Would set it and fo'gettaboutit, so I decided he needed a UDS. We built this one as a dual purpose tri-tip/chunk of elk hanger, as well as the traditional UDS. Haven't tried cooking anything on it yet, but damn it looks good!!

Here it is deconstructed - Barrel, ash pan (yet to be burnt), basket, Tri-tip divider, drip pan grate, drip pan, cooking grate, lid.

Reconstructed so's you can see the innards

And the pimped out part - Coal divider for the hangers. In my years of using my REALLY UGLY DS, I built a coal divider so that the meat didn't hang directly over the coals. This produced a noticeably better cook. This divider will allow for right at a full chimney of coal on either side with the meat hung towards the middle.

Used 1" angle, welded right below the lip of the drum.

And a look of it in regular TPUDS mode

    Ain't she a beut, Clark?

Bassman is off to the paint store, so who know's what color she will end up.

Here's the other project - a regular UDS for a good friend of mine.

And the ugliest trio in town!

A super huge thank you to DDave!! for patiently answering all of my questions!!

Thanks for checking out our build project - was a blast... hopefully we are smart enough to figure out how to use them!!

I think the one on the right is the neatest one of the bunch. Still don't know about the color but I think I have a can of black somewhere in the garage.

Many thanks to Tracey for building me a UDS which if left to my own devices, probably would never have gotten done.

Great post, I would love to build something like that.

Love em. I'd like to see the Tri Tip one in action. Nothing like seeing a unique UDS come together

I must have missed this post, but just happened to have these pics of a couple of tri tips in Walle's cooker. Works like a champ. Had to borrow Rich's camera, but you get the idea.
