  • New guy here...gonna build one!!

So im not sure what happened...but here lately being a hunter and wanting to cook and capture my own meats etc, i suddenly wanted to start cooking different ways and stumbled across the cheap UDS method.

So the start of looking for a drum was on....

Today my father is supposed to pick up a 55 gallon drum from his work and then I will start on my build here in TN.

    cant wait!!

Yeah...actually I read your build last night but never saw final pics!.

I will def put pics up. I was browsing the web for a forum that had a heavy UDS section and this one seemed to be the best I could find so far.

Welcome to the forums. There is a sticky in the UDS forum that gives some very good suggestions on your project if you need some help.

Thanks...appreciate it. I have been researching all over the place the past day and a half. Once I get my barrel I will measure and see what all I can work with. I am just kind of confused on what you guys use do for thermometers and areas to run meat thermos through.

I just drilled a hole in the side big enough to get my probes in. Your going to like the way a UDS cooks and how well it holds temps!!

Do you not have a tight seal once the probes are in? or are u speaking for the actual smoker thermo...or the meat thermo??

I haven't noticed any problems doing it that way. I've even done that with my wsm's and don't have a problem. You could I guess use a cork to plug the hole with the probe through the cork. Don't think that would be a problem. Although there are more folks on this forum who know more about it than me....someone else jump in and give their opinion.

Ill post the the pics as soon as I grab the barrel. I have pretty much all the tools I need in my garage. I dont have a welder, but I can weld a hair...nothing pretty though. So this will probably just be all bolt together. I am hoping to do a weber style lid on top but I guess I will see once the drum is in my possession.
