  • Can someone help me with a caulk question

I am pretty sure I used the wrong stuff on my build and I am going to have to scrape all this crap out now. I used high temp RTV from Menards that is good to 500F, but reading through the MSDS sheet it says it could start off gassing at temps above 150C which is equivilent to around 300F. What are you guys using??

Perhaps you just need a good hot burn or two empty...

That is what I use and to my knowledge is food safe as it is designed for kitchen ranges also. Never had any problems with it.

I am guessing re-seasoning the smoker at a 350º to 400º after the product is in place should take care of future gassing issues...

Dont you think though that everytime I fire it up and it goes above three bills it would still be offgassing?? Here's what I used.

Outgassing is typically a linear thing... alot at first..then less - and less..as the volatiles evaporate. Heat 'er up good a few times empty, and don't worry....

Attached is the MSDS- key here is the VOC...Volatile Organic Solvents... <5%
And the HMIS code for health... 0

Heat the stuff up a couple times, then cook and sleep well.

I used clear silicone that has a usda approval. Bought at the local hardware store.

I did not use the high temp, as I recall the regular silicone is good to 400 and I never intend to go over 300 and usually cruise around 200-225

when I ran my build after applying silicone & such I tossed in a big roast, cooked her up good and gave all my neighbors some. Now when I Q they don't seem to bother me as much...

Relax,,, It'll probably out gas all the way on your first run so long as you get it up to its top rated temp and burn it for an hour or so,,, if not, test it out on your neighbors....

I have had good results with the permatex Red, used it to hold the glass rope on the firebox as well as make a seal for the smoke chamber door.

And for those worried about the safety factor.

Permatex has a High Temp. RED RTV Silicone Gasket Maker and is safe to
use around food products .It is certified NSF/ANSI STANDARD 51 Food Equipment Materials ...( indirectly around food )Temp. max. is 600 F continuous and 650 F intermittently ... The Ultra Copper is not NSF

                              Permatex MSDS

I used this as a cement inside the firebox, there was a small gap from the firebox to smoke chamber.
