My uninsulated GOSM cab with a 1800W element will go from 140 to 185 depending on outside temps. Insulated you might be looking at 180's plus I'd think... but how big? Vent? Etc.

There was a post I read not too long ago. Don't remember if it was here or at the smurf. I believe they said they got the fridge up to 225 no problem.

How high you wanting to go? Is this for a "do everything" smoker or more specialized like just doing sausage?

I'll be picking it up from the shop this weekend, I'll know more about measurements then.

Nope, no plastic, older fiberglass insulation - no foam. It's an old LP gas fired refrigerator, Servel I think.

Nice find... should be pretty efficient. Gonna take a bit to warm it up, but should hold OK. Dunno about 275 on 1500 W tho. Eh..you can add more.

I use a Brinkmann in my freezer conversion. Enamel on steel liner, glass insulated. I have gotten it up to 300 deg. in the summer. I also have fire brick in the bottom and a homebuilt heat diffuser. Doubt it could do it in the winter. I'm also not sure how long the element will last at these temps, although I've gotten over 5 years out of mine so far. I think I should keep a second element on hand in case it craps out in the middle of a smoke, and the Ace hardware isn't open. Routinely I use this for smoking sausage, so rarely send it over 170 anymore. I use a charcoal pan inside it for smoking ribs, brisket, butts, etc. when I have to do a lot of those items. I think the coals do a better job on this kind of smoking anyway.

It will take it beyond 250, which for a smoker...not a grill, is pretty damn good. You will rarely need those temps. Good find on the fridge!!

I had no problem getting my fridge to 300 with the brinkman element. It took 27 min to reach 302 and I had it up to 351 for six hours as a season this past weekend. My inside dimensions are probably a little smaller than most though. 14"D X 24"W X 50" T.

I made one out of a sheet of app. 16 ga. steel app. 20 x 20 inches. drilled with 1/4" holes, then slightly curved. used threaded rod for the legs, so it sits about 10" above my element. You can see it in this thread; http://www.smoked-meat.com/forum/sho...t=12502&page=2
