UDS allure

Well I couldn't stand it anymore, I just have to build one of these UDS's. They look like so much fun to cook on, and gain more cooking surface for large family BBQ's. While getting propane at the feed store I asked the guy if they have 55 gallon drums. He said no, but knows someone who does. I drive over and find the place and the drums are all stacked up on their sides. I wanted just one barrel, but for ten bucks a piece I got two. The barrels are clean and straight with bare metal inners, this should make things easier. They were closed top drums and he cut the tops off leaving the lip on, no big deal it will work.
I'll post progress as it happens, might take awhile.

Looks like you got some nice barrels I'm getting the uds itch just waiting for my mechanic to come drain the waste oil out of it. Keep the pics coming.

Hell of a find. Those are clean drums!

Worth $10+ a piece easily. You're in for a treat. Nothing like cooking something that is your best on something you put together

Picked up some odds and ends parts for the UDS.
3/4 vent fittings, two 21.5 inch grates, 14.5 inch grate for basket and I didn't forget the bottle opener. I bought an extra bottle opener for my Yoder. You can never have to many bottle openers.
I'll be picking up some bolts and stuff this weekend.
Still figuring out what to do for a lid and where to find some expanded metal.

Well if you could find a couple of kettle lids that would be great Some of the knock off clone kettle lids fit well too.

I found expanded metal cheap at a local scrap yard and since I don't know how to weld I used hose clamps to assemble the charcoal basket. Been working great so far.

Thanks for the tips. I found out about a scrapyard near-by going to check it out. I also made a big score on a 22.5 Weber grill today. A co-worker had one that he never uses and donated it to the UDS cause. I'm going to make a top out of the bottom half of the weber for my second drum.
