  • Mods for my Smoker?

Hi guys, Ive had my smoker since christmas, The one thing I noticed is that the temp gauge has never read above 150 degrees but my fatties and other meat Ive smoked all smoke and have higher internal temps than that. My little menards grill pro smoker has 2 racks a water bowl and a charcoal bowl, Only a single door on the bottom. Are these style smokers prone to low heat? I haven't really used since it got warm out so Im not sure if it was just the cold weather. Are there any mods I can do for temp control? thought about building a fan for it.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Those stock thermometers that come with the smokers are usually off. You really need to get a good thermometer so you know what temps you are smoking at for sure. That eliminates a lot of the guess work.I like the dual probe wireless units so I can monitor the temps in the smoker as well as the temps of the meat.

Thanks for the info guys. I was kinda wondering how accurate they were. Id just hate to throw a $50.00 brisket on it and have it go bad before it cooked ya know. Thats not a bad buy for a nice therm.

You can also just buy a cheap dial oven thermometer but you have to lift the lid to see it. They do work well other than that.

Here's a little experiment I did with the stock thermos on a Brinkmann Smoke N Pit.

You certainly don't want to trust expensive meat to cheap thermos.

Thanks Dave for that. Im definatly getting a digital. So this whole time when My thermo was reading 110 degrees it was probably 220. can't wait to get one and try it out.

If its removable you can test it in boiling water, and perhaps even adjust it, if not the maverick mentioned above is a nice unit.
