  • Yoder YS640 Direct Grilling using the optional Grill Grates

Hi all, and how are you this fine evening?

This video is in response to several questions I have received recently. Folks want to know how the Yoder YS640 stands up to direct grilling. Can one achieve char or grill marks in their meats.

I try to be as informative as possible so I shot a video showing the direct grilling process start to end. I have to admit even I was impressed on this one. I say this because all who know me have yet to see me post a fast paced grilling video until now. I'm a low and slow guy and that’s true with steaks and chicken parts. I may have to do a little more direct grilling. Just a little...

The steaks were amazing! But then again they did have Mad Hunky Rub on them. Yes Rich, I gave you another plug!

Well hell... Here it is... Hope you enjoy.

Video worked fine for me Brian...

Great job Rob showing how a pellet smoker works great as a wood fired grill over the burn pot! GrillGrates are just a nice bonus, we love ours!

It's the audio. The background music is drowning out Robs narrative.

                    Looks good.

Does the Yoder have a blower on it?

Good Lord when you were putting the steaks on it sounded like a blower was going and sparks were flying . . . reminded me of the boiler fire box.

Way to rock that beef Rob and the Mad Hunky on it I bet was good.
That was great to see the grill grates in action. I have yet to get those for my grill.

Dave it has two fans on it to move air. I mentioned I was using a shotgun mic. These mices are directional mics and are designed to reach out at great distances and bring in quality sound while at the same time filtering out sound from the rear and sides.

This video was an audio nightmare and I should have never posted it. I just hate throwing away time and work. However, Mikey is right and I get that so I re shot the video this eveing using a lapel mic. You will notice that the audio is much clearer as the shotgun mike was filter my voice out as I was standing behind the camera.

Hell the kids didn't mind... They got to eat killer steaks two nights in a row. And I will say they were friggen "Killer" good steaks!

New video is up at the start of the thread. Thanks Mikey!

Are they variable speed and proportionally controlled like the pellet auger?

Dang that thing is sounding more and more like the boiler feed system all the time.

                          Process control stuff interests me.

The fans are not variable speed. However the pellet feed control system is one of the most advanced as far as real time reading of the thermocouple and adjusting on the fly, that I have seen. It doesn't matter what altitude, humidity, wind chill etc... It continuously looks at its temps and will change feed rates as needed. I have been involved in beta testing and have seen the insides and the logic behind it. Joe Phillips of Yoder is a precision driven man.

                              Cool!

Do the fans run all the time or do they come on to help stoke the fire for higher temps?
