  • Hockey, and honor... 101

For many of you folks, I know yer not hockey fans, and you don't know who Don Cherry is. He's an old, grumpy, egotistical as hell Canuck who happened to coach Boston to a couple Cups. He has strange and quite parochial opinions, hates "foreigners" in the game, and usually is quite funny while he does all this. "Coach's Corner" has been an institution for sheesh..I dunno HOW long at the firt period break during the firt game on "Hockey Night in Canada" and I admit...used to catch it whenever I could.

He also came out VERY strongly for America after the 911 attacks. Almost got him canned, as a matter of fact.

Anyway...here's a basic hockey lesson... entitled "Honor"

You're right Rich, and he drives me crazy, but we watch him every week because the man knows his hockey. I would wager there isn't a team in the league that wouldn't want him as their coach .....

Both my kids played hockey when we lived up north. We were always proud of good hits but never wanted to see anyone get hurt. Class even if they were fighting!!

Great post Rich. I had not seen that one. Grapes is a love/hate kind a guy but I always try to tune in as if nothing else he's alway entertaining. I like old school guys getting the floor once in a while as our own Mickey Redmond still does.

                  Thank so much Sir R,
I grew up with Don Cherry, my son however did not. He is on the Ducks bandwagon, not that, that is bad but so many things had changed from when I fell in love with the sport then when he did, and honor and fighting was one of those things. He never saw everyone pair up on the ice drop their gloves and sticks. Never saw a bench clearing brawl at the end of a period.. hell, he never saw the "broad street bullies". I had him watch this piece because sooooo many people here in California still talk about how it is such a brutal sport and all they do is fight.. idoits.. they have obviously never watched a game let alone a playoff game where they have just played their hearts out and skate down the middle of the ice to shake hands with the team that has just beaten them.. Honor, it is the MOST honorable pro sport there is.
Thank you again, for giving me the opportunity to teach Tim the core of the game, I owe you once again, sir.

Don's right on this one. Old time hockey was, as they say, "went to a fight and a hockey game broke out". I grew up with the Bruins and the Broad Street Bully's . That brings back some names, Ehh,

It's part of the game and I admit I enjoy it if done with some honor and integrity.

Hockey players are the class of professional sports. They can beat the crap out of each other and go out and have a beer after the game. I know that sounds bizarre but it's true. Just watch hockey players with the press, they're not in it for stats, personal accolades, etc.

Being an Av's fan ( leave it alone, I know we suck now) back in the day when we were competing with Detroit for Cups, and getting a couple along the way, ran into Darren McCarty at a Denver bar after the game. He was a very nice guy, said he loved playing in Denver and that we had great fans. He could have talked all kinds of junk but was a good guy . He was also out drinking with a bunch of the Avs as they knew the line between friendship and business.

I have never seen him down here.I know who he is though....He is rough on Ovechkin, but since becoming captain Ovechkin is really toning down the borderline hits....He better or he could end up like cam neely and have a shorter career then deserved...Doesnt hurt he is 6'3 240 and fast.

The link doesnt come up for me.....I enjoy the fighting as part of the game, but seems alot of headshots this year...Our last game before break they were calling every little interference etc...I think they are gonna really clamp down after olympics, which is cool for caps....We do not have a enforcer this year...

gew up watching Probert, Kocur, Clark and Domi. Hockey Night in Canada was great, looked forward to watching coaches corner. Loved watching that hockey. The influx of the "foreigners" and pressure to cut down on the fighting to get the TV deals has definitely changed the game.

Cool deal....I do feel the vast majority of hockey players are honorable.Much less trouble off-ice compared with some other sports as well...
