  • $10 craigslist find... 18.5 Weber, chimney, and cover.

Okay I could not pass it up...

18.5 Weber with chimney, and cover for $10 bucks..

This might sound a bit strange but I have NEVER used charcoal before...NEVER.... After seeing many of you play on your webers I have wanted to try it and found this deal and could not pass up... they even brought it to my house... even brought it to 1/2 mile of my house.

Okay this is were I need your help...I just want to try a burger first on this.. I have always wanted to try a burger cooked over charcoal and for ten buck I figured I would give it a try... I could not even begin to tell you how many coals I need to do this... 8, 10, 15???

I have looked though many of the mods out there and maybe I will get some of those fire bricks... this is just a toy as I have my Yoder to do most of my cooking on... but again I just wanted a burger cooked this way.

Here is what I have to start with... what do I do with the vents on the bottom and top How open do I have them??

On a side note just finished 8 quarts of fresh tomato puree today woo hoo, sorry no pics this time !!

    Thanks guys!!

I use enough coals to match the surface area of the amount of burgers I am cooking with a little over lap. I am almost always doing at least 8 so I just load the chimney up. Once you close the vents the coals go out and you can use them next time. Never did a single but I think a dozen would be fine. I open the bottom halfway and the top wide open. You may want to flip that chimney upside down for lighting smaller amounts. The chimney looks pretty well used. Eventually they deform enough that the grate can drop out if you don't put a nail or something through the loop the protrudes from the side.

The part of my quote about reinforcing the grate became irrelevant.

I've had the bottom rust out of 1 of that type of chimney starter & my buddies just rusted out on his. I would suggest keeping an eye on it. One thing I do like about them is IMO they are the perfect size for a cockspatched chicken cook, as they are a little smaller than the Weber chimneys, at least mine

                Good Score!!!!!

Congrats! Great find! I'd fill that chimney about 3/4 full. And don't worry...you'll do just fine and will get the hang of it in no time!

You would have to use both to understand Weber's are hands down made a lot better And like Mr. Fish said they are a little bigger

Definitely agree. 10 bucks? Better be careful Brian, you get used to this kettle you might want to post that Yoder on CL.
