  • Aphids on the Japs...

My jalapeno plant is being eaten alive by aphids. I hit them with some Bacardi in a spray bottle so... If nothing else they will have a helluva hangover.
Anyone have any better solutions? I don't really want to use a pesticide because I have a big ol' praying mantis protecting my tomato plant nearby. Sorry I don't have any pics but I am still working with an old computer after my house was burglarized.

Order you some ladybugs and put them out or make a soap spray and hit them once a week..

    1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 drops of liquid dish soap
    4 cups warm water

Shake well and spray the leaves and stems..

        There it is

You should also check out Gardens Alive (www.gardensalive.com) and see what they offer.
Everything they sell is 100% organic and there may be something you can spray that would kill the aphids and not harm the sexy praying mantis.
Plus you can get lady bugs from them that are indigenous and not Asian which are such a pain in the ass come Fall.

Do a google search for this.......Diatomaceous Earth

The best organic stuff EVER. Have been using it now for a few years and it is by far the best stuff I have ever used. Works by cutting the exoskeleton of insects and it totally safe for human consumption. I use it in the garden on all my veggies and on my chickens to control mites. Many places carry it, some cheaper than others.

My Dad used to use that stuff for our pool filter. All I remember aboot it is that you don't want to breathe it in, it will clog up the lungs.

                    Anyway, I'll look into it.

                      That's a great tip
Never tried it myself but seems to be pretty cheap to order so I'll definitely be giving this a try next year.

Looks like there's 2 types 1 for pools and 1 calling food grade that would be safe for consumption. Make sure you get the food grade stuff

Also be sure to mist the plants really well with water before you release the lady bugs. They are severely dehydrated when they come out of hibernation and need to drink.

3rd or 4th diotomatious earth. We use it on 1.5 acer veg garden, use a duster and get it all good.
