I have a smoke Hollow propane smoker. I'm trying to get the temperature down for smoking sausages. I took off the regulator and took it to the propane shop to get a needle valve. The guy said it would be impossible because I had something like a .5 psi regulator.

Anyone have ideas on what my options are? I have the side burner off of an old gas grill I could use but I'm not sure what I could do with it.

    Thanks!

You don't specify how low you want the temps, but you can even cold smoke with one of these:

Well, you could just get another regulator I suppose... altho I dont understand why the reg pressure would be an issue...

        Here's some info:

I have a Masterbuilt XL that is no longer my hot smoker of choice, since I got the Yoder. I haven't done much cold smoking but I used the Masterbuilt to cold smoke Jerky b4n going into a dehydrator last winter. Go on Amazon and pick up a cheap single burner electric hot plate and a A-maze-in smoker to put on the bottom of your smoker. I was able to control temps fairly easily from 70- 190 degrees with just the hot plate. And a hot plate is dirt cheap these days.

most regulators are 10 psi for low pressure. Smoke hollow uses a tiny .5 lb regulator. No way to throttle back the temp to 130 or so it 225 or higher with that little flow.

I had thought about a pid and heating element. Seems like I should just sell the propane rig and get an electric

I use an electric burner in my GOSM when doing jerky, The needle valve can get it pretty low...sometimes too low.
Feel more comfortable using electric for such low temps.

Two things come to mind; First, is there room for a charcoal basket insert? and (sorry to the traditionalists in the house) 225 is low for the way I cook. Don't totally buy into the "low and slow" thing till ya figger out what works for you.
