  • Baked squirrel w/ bacon

I got tired of this one squirrel eating nuts and dropping the leftovers on my RV I just finished cleaning off. Plus, I have to be honest... I like squirrel! There, I said it.

The female was WAY up in an oak tree and it was a long shot but my new .17 HMR is crazy accurate. Never have owned a weapon with such a flat trajectory. She twitched for a spilt second before she fell but, positively stiff when she hit the RV roof. The impact also managed to remove most of the organs for me and mess up one of the legs on exit (bad angle). Ah well, head shot next time since I know it is dialed in. Over 1.3 lbs dressed out to over 10 oz so not bad.

45 mins at 350* should be about right. It usually is. Trying out a (new to me) premade seasoning from SusyQ + bacon to keep it from drying out.

Never had it baked. My mom always battered and fried it like chicken and then smothered it in gravy... Delicious! Baked with Bacon should be great too.

yep fried is good too this just is the fastest way, I know, where I do not have to watch it.

I have always liked it since I was a kid. I was very happy to move back out to the country a few years back as pinking tree rats out of the neighbors trees was frowned upon.

I would say it tastes like extra strong dark meat on a chicken. Can be stringy if the thing is old or cooked improperly just like chicken.

Question... how loud is that .17? I assume one still gets the "crack" it being super-sonic...

It makes the dog shake when it fires. i.e. stupid LOUD!

That little piece of lead is rolling! But if you are the target you probably don't hear it. ;)

I have a Gamo .177. Chipmonks hate me. But it's good for maybe 20-30 yards. They do make some good stuff.

Yep why I picked up the HMR. You can shot out 100 yards but you need a dialed in mildot scope and know how to use it or some type of natural ability I do not possess.

I can honestly say I've never eaten a squirrel. So, I got nothing constructive to add. I would try it though, jeez, I tried gator so why not try squirrel. My thought would be to make a Shepard's Pie sorta dish. If it's a darker meat I think the taters and veggies, not to mention an awesome gravy would be fine with squirrel.

I didn't know that was an option, I'll never look at squirrels the same now. (adds squirrels to cooking bucket list...)
