  • What the hell has happened to good ol' American White Bread?

Ain't sure if this the right forum, but here goes anyway. It seems to me that all of the white bread I buy these days is pure crap. I remember when I was a kid, it was soft and flexible. The junk that is being sold today is dry and crumbly, like it is more sawdust and cellulose than flour. Our local brand, Mrs. Bairds was sold to the Mexican giant Bimbo several years ago and quality has declined radically. I have tried them all, Sarah Lee, Iron Kids, Sunbeam, etc. All the same crumbly crap! Does anybody still make good soft white bread?

My mom was kind of a hippy, and my dad was from Brooklyn. So either we got homemade, rye, or full of nuts and seeds. I never developed a liking to store bought white bread. Now I have tried some of the potato flour breads. They're pretty white and soft.

Stopped buying that shit years ago, after my first European adventure. Realized $.69 a loaf white bread was about as flavorful as cardboard, and had the texture of wet shitpaper..... Bake my own, buy from a decent bakery, or better yet, one of the local artisan places that has popped up near here.
Once you go Weber....you never call customer service....
