  • Cast Iron Renovation

My mom has had an old CI griddle in her back patio for years. I'm guessing at least 5 years. I thought it was always junk. But now I know that CI can be renovated. Heres my shot at fixing up the old griddle.

I scrubbed it with salt. Got some of the rust off. Still had a bunch of rust, so I used oven cleaner. Sprayed both sides and put it in a bag overnight. The next day I rinsed it and scrubbed it down with 000 steel wool and managed to get everything off...even the paint! Took a lot of work but well worth it.

    Now I'm wanting more junk!!

That is one nice piece of cast iron! You definitely got a gem there. Love me some Wagner CI!!! Great job on the restoration. Are you going to season it?

We were given a Dutch Oven that's in bad shape. You've given me a clue on how to bring it back to life. Thanks.

I have it in the kamado seasoning as I type. However I used canola oil. I need to go out and get some flaxseed oil, heard that does a much better job.

                Really nice.

I have a rusted CI skillet that I'm going to have to refurbish as well...I may try the electrolysis method using my battery charger...you know, because It sounded like a good experiment and I don't want to expend the elbow grease!

I "seasoned" my oyster pan with EVOO a while back. Big mistake! Totally gummy. Start over...,

Fine job on that griddle, and you'll be glad you did it once you start cooking on it.

What a beautiful piece! Thank you for giving it some TLC. What are you going to cook first on it? If it were mine it would be Bacon!

Use Crisco or lard or bacon fat ... animal fat. Vegetable oil will stay sticky. Learned the hard way.
