  • Cricket....?

    Ok, Ok, don't flame me..
But I went to visit an old very dear friend last night whom I had not seen in a very long time. He has been here 25+ years, still sounds like a limey tho..
We were sitting around his snooker table chatting, he hands me a basball, this is pretty hard right? how fast do they pitch this at you? yes its hard, and what 100 mph... I say, then he hands me a cricket ball, hell this thing was leather but it was as hard as a pool cue, they "bowl" it at 120 mph, and catch it with their bare hands... I learned all about the game which btw can last 5 days... Bizarre rules as far as I was concerned but I grew up with baseball. I gotta give it to you guys across the pond, I'm thinking you must break your hand a lot playing that cricket!

True, MOST Major League Pitchers don't do 100 mph.
Best ones "maybe" get to 110 but that's only occasional.

they "bowl" it at 120 mph,
          rare very very rare.
          Most fast bowlers hit 80-90.
But bear in mind there are specialist slow bowlers as well who spin the ball so that it bounces unpredictably.
          Exactly like baseball pitchers.

and catch it with their bare hands
          Well yeah lol
No point making it easy :-)

And yep test matches are played over four innings and five days.
but the current buzz is about much shorter one day matches of only 20 overs per innings and only 2 innings (confused yet ? )
each over consists of 6 balls and an innings is over when all eleven opposing players are bowled out or have scored more runs than their opponents if they're batting second.
Interestingly this was pioneered and funded by that american billionaire who's just been done up for humoungous amounts of fraud.

It's actually a very simple sport we just like to make it sound complicated to americans

test cricket itself is intensely boring to watch but immensely entertaining to listen to on radio.
When a match can take 4 days and play isn't exactly fast it takes a special breed of sports commentator to do radio commentary.

            I tried . . . really I did.

I lived in New Zealand from June of 98 to June of 99. I tried watching cricket but just couldn't seem to get into it. I remarked to a friend of mine who was living there (albeit another American) that maybe it would be more interesting to watch if I understood it more. He simply said, "No, it wouldn't." I never did listen to it on the radio though.

Now rugby . . . that's pretty entertaining to watch.

MLB pitcher that's hitting 100-101 is throwing absolute FIRE. I have never seen/heard of a 110 MPH baseball thrown before.

Here are a few "internet" facts I found:

The Guinness Book of World Record has Nolan Ryan as the fastest ever at 100.9mph.

the Baseball Almanac does list pitchers with pitches in excess of 103 mph, listing Mark Wohlers, Braves, 1995 with the 103.0 mph pitch at "spring training"

Chuck Norris threw a man at 217mph. It was calculated at 398mph had he been a baseball. Now that's a fact!

(I usually lay golden eggs when I get into the batting cage that throws 80 MPH - and can't hit a thing).

I sure had fun playing Cricket in England. First couple times got hammered with inabilities. Asked if I could bring my Louisville Slugger one day! My mates had a blast with that dang bat! I was never a good bowler. Alway's made for great fun, cause i'd bring a grill & hot dog's & burgers.
