GMS are good inexpensive pellet smokers. I looked at them when I was shopping for a pellet smoker and liked many of the features. Bang for the buck. But I didn't like the made in china cheaper metal or the design of the auger and temp controls. I pretty much ruled out many of the "made in china" pellet smokers due to what (to me) was cheaply made materials and machinery. I finally ended up with my YS640 and absolutely love the quality and built like a tank sturdiness, let alone being made in USA.

If you have a limited budget, then there are a couple mfgs that make the short list:
    1) RecTec - pretty good quality, even for a made in china pellet smoker that sells for about a grand
    2) Green Mountain - bang for the buck, but you will end up getting what you pay for and probably have to replace IMO.
    3) Old Traeger - if you can find an old Traeger, they were made pretty well here in the Pacific NW before they outsourced them to China. The newer ones, in my opinion, are just junk. That being said, I have many friends that swear by them.

If you are willing to spend a bit more (money well worth it in my opinion) and want good quality pellet smokers that are made in the USA there are a few that I would recommend:
    1) Yoder YS640 - best darn built PS for the money. Built like a tank and great people to deal with. IMO the most versatile PS on the market for the money and made in Kansas
    2) MAK General Star 2 - the best controller on the market and great quality that is made right here in Oregon. A bit pricy at $2200, but definitely a rock star.
    3) FEC PG1000 - Fast Eddy Cookshack - a great PS with all sorts of features and high quality built, but way out of my price range at $2800.

I do have a friend that has a GMS Jim Bowie who absolutely loves it....

        GMG

I too have a GMG and it was leaking grease from the bottom. Called to tech folks at GMG and they said they would look into the problem. Two hours later it got a call from the store I bought it from and the next day had a new GMG.
Great service I only hope they fixed the problem.

Maybe your friend should think about a MAK 1 Star?
