I been given a Yoder YS640 to demo the last 2 weeks and can honestly tell you you're going to love it. I cooked Tri-tip, Chicken breast, and a Cornish Game Hen and each came off the Yoder the best I've ever had. This weekend I'm cooking Babyback Ribs. I have tried a Fast Eddy PG1000 and currently have a Mak 2 Star and the Yoder comes out on top for cooking the items mentioned. The 1 yr old Mak 2 Star may be up for sale after I cook ribs on the Yoder this weekend.

When I unpacked mine last week, I had to get a strong friend and his ATV ramps to roll it off the pallet. We added some wood planks to the pallet to helps the wheels roll. Empty it first! Respect the weight.
It's so solidly built. Read up in the pellet smoker sub-forum about the dampener. When I finally get a day off I'll be trying some more temp tests. Also, if you want to get a grommet for temp probes instead of running them under the cover, I got 10 high temp ones coming in and will mail one free to you. You'll have to drill a hole for it, but it's an accepted practice. I'm gonna try the gasket idea too, have the Nomex stuff when I get friggin time to touch my lonely 'Precious'.
"Soon my love, soon you and I will make food only dreamed of by folks with cheap electric smokers". LOL. Yes, I'm off work and have had a medicine of ice and JD.

For a long cook such as a 20 hour brisket cook, and if you are limited in mobility as I am, the pellet smoker is the way to go for me. Much less physical effort is required with the exception of adding more pellets after 10 hours, and foiling the meat product. Results are excellent.
The wood smoker, on the other hand, for me, and not speaking for someone else, is better served for cooks between 5 to 8 hours. For this duration, smoking a whole chicken, or doing flats of ribs are usually the direction that I take. There is also the "FUN" factor because, I find personal enjoyment in tending the fire and regulating air flow in order to maintain a constant temperature let's say of 225 degrees to have a quality finished product over the duration of the cook.
For the purpose of direct heat or higher heat cooking, I find the Weber Kettle to be extremely versatile. Steaks on a high heat charcoal fire can't be beat as well as burgers and other items. With the addition of a rotissieri, the Weber can produce a beautiful whole chicken cooked brined with Mad Hunky Poultry Brine plump and juicy as well as a delicious pork loin roast brined with the pork brine of the same vendor. Put on a Kettlepizza attachment to the Weber and after it is set up and operational, you can have a nice pizza within 5 minutes.
So, be that as it may, there are different strokes for all of the folks with pluses and minuses for all avenues ventured.
