  • Sevin Dust

OK, I know some of you have had a lousy year -- a disaster -- with tomato plants. But, I haven't and my annual problem is beginning to show up. Tomato Horn Worms. Usually I treat my plants and the ground around them with either 5% or 10% Sevin Dust, which works great, until it rains. Then you have to wait for the ground to dry and re-apply. Problem is, up here in the central great plains it has been a fairly damp summer. Anybody have any other treatments for these critters. The one I pulled off was a tiny one, about an inch long but had already ate up a couple of leaves overnight.

I hear the nature dudes use a hot pepper solution with a ciggarette butt or three tossed in. Seriously. Work? Dunno. Turns me off and I LOVE tomatoes.

Don't put a cigaret but spray on tomatoes, Nicotene will kill a tomato plant! If you smoke don't touch a tomato plant without wearing gloves, they are very sensitive to tobacco.
I use a Pyrethium spray (sp?)

Hmmm was it pepper plants that was for then?? Or what? I read about that years ago in some "green" type magazine...

          Ah HA... http://www.essortment.com/all/homemadeinsecti_rvxg.htm

"Nicotine can be a very effective method of pest control as well. It is naturally derived, however, it is not usually used in organic gardens due to its toxicity. Nicotine can be deadly to most insects and humans, when swallowed in concentrate. This poisonous compound, affects the neuromuscular system causing insects to go into convulsions and die. Sometimes you can see it sold commercially, mixed with sulfur. One commonly used product is Black Flag's Nicotine Sulfate.

Nicotine sulfate(tobacco/water tea combined with sulfur) is excellent for use on all plants except members of the nightshade family(potatoes, eggplants, peppers, tomatoes). To make your own tobacco spray: simply combine 1/2 ounce of tobacco per quart of water, soak for one day at room temperature and strain the resultant tea. Nicotine sprays are useful on all insects, but are usually used for aphids. It is not recommended to use nicotine sulfate on plants you intend to use for consumption."

I must have been smoking a different kind of cigarette. For years I smoked 3 packs a day and worked in my tomato garden. Never had a problem with the plants. I have heard of fusarium wilt along with tobacco mosaic but never saw either one in my garden.

Dave The most effective method Ive found is to go out to your plants right after dark with a flashlight. Thats when the party is just beginning. Hand pick those suckers and drown em in a can of water with some dish soap in it. After three or four nights your problem will be greatly reduced. I took care of cutworms the same way a few years back. The neighbors thought I was nuts...but some things never change...

Ditto on the tobacco thing...Tobacco and tomatoes are indeed from the same family and are very succeptable to the same diseases...

When you find them blow them away with a BB gun. Gives you some instant gratification!

I used a biological spray called BT worm killer. It has no effect on beneficial insects. Only kills worm and caterpillar type bugs. Took care of my pinworms and is supposed to be good for your horn worms.

Tried the BT a few years ago with poor results. That was a dry year. Heck, I can give it another try. Maybe use both BT and sevin and go out right after dark and start picking them off.

Better than a BB gun or soap and water I fond is put them in a can and after collected dump them on a hard surface. Spray with a little gasoline, toss a match. poof, they are snap, crackle pop.
