  • Today is the day...

My ys480 arrives.I got the top shelf, and optional grilling and smoking packages from atbbq which include frogmats, Amazn tube smoker, maverick 732 and grilling grates. Feels a lot like Christmas, Couldn't sleep last night:) Never tried the Mad Hunky so ordered some and it came extremely fast. I got 2 lbs of mhgp, 1 poultry brine and a pizza shake.

I've got so many things I want to cook, where should I start? Never been to happy with ribs on the obs, so I was thinking of starting there. But I'm also leaning towards a brisket and trying burnt ends for the first time. Thoughts?

Congrats.. Personally... I would do a whole chicken and or a butt.. pretty forgiving pieces of meat and lets you learn the cooker and season it well prior to doing a brisket (dang these are getting more and more expensive everyday)....Ribs good too... Just my thoughts.. just give up the pics no matter what you cook!!

Well, since you fairly new at this I take it and using a new unit MY advice, for what it's worth, would be an average sized butt....5-7 pounds for a longer cook but a forgiving piece of meat to test it out and get some splatter in the Yoder. If you got the room and wanna throw in a couple whole chickens for a test, by all means, forge ahead with that as well. Whole birds are cheap enough and can be a challenge as well......Willie

Ive done butts 3 times in last month for various party's, so I want to do something different. Maybe I'll start small and save the brisket for later. I've got a full day of work to think about it before I head to store. Thanks for the ideas

I'm on the butt side as well... a very forgiving piece of meat, while you learn your new cooker. I wouldn't jump right into a brisket just yet if I were you...

I also got this meat slicer recently.I'd like slice up some lunch meat for myself and the kids. They prefer turkey and roast beef. Which cuts of meat would be good to get for this?

Spatchcocked chicken or a pork butt are the easiest to get to know your cooker. Ribs would be fairly easy as well, and if you followed the 3-2-1 method (or a variation of it) then it would be a good test. Make sure to wipe some canola oil on the grates to help with the overall seasoning after you do the initial burn in, as it will aid in cleaning up the first actual cook.

Congrats and enjoy that YS480! You are going to love it.

I'd go for a big turkey thigh. Easy to bone out and tie and hands down the tastiest bit of the bird. Also a lot more forgiving than breast.

Beef wise - not a clue, all your cuts not only have different names, but are cut from different parts of the animal to ours :-)

So is this a pellet pooper or charcoal or what ?
