Heck the vista version would be okay. trying to get an old laptop up and running to take and leave at work rather than the good one.

I was cleaning up some of my hoarding piles and I found the recovery disk for this laptop. I decided to just do a HD wipe (which took over 36 hours) and reload to original specs. The laptop is working fine now (yeah) the modem talks to the internet (double yeah) but the friggin laptop doesn't seem to be able to communicate through the modem. I haven't a clue but have been tempted to go to the roof of the tallest building and chunking it over the side.

if the hd wipe took that long - then you probably need a new hardrive.

Also sounds like you either need to check the wifi chip drivers or make sure it's switched on from the machine/keyboard shortcut.

Complete system restore is never a good idea.
