  • UDS Charcoal basket..Will this work?

Any thoughts or suggestions on this charcoal basket? I haven't added the handle yet, waiting until it's perfect.

Used a 16" pizza pan as an ashtray. 16" grate for the bottom of the basket. Used 12"x24" expanded steel for the basket, giving me a diameter of appx 7 1/2 x 12".

From the ground to the bottom of the basket is 3 1/4".
From the lip of the pizza pan to the bottom of the basket is 2 3/4".

    No galvanized nuts/bolts.

    Will this work? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!!!

I'm not a uds guy so I may be blowin smoke, but it seems to me if it had a larger diameter and a shorter height, the heat would be a bit further away from the food.

I love the pizza pan ash tray though.

It will work but . . . Keith is right. I think shorter and fatter would be a better option. You might have a little trouble with the ash not being able to work its way down through the fuel to the ash pan which will give you trouble on long cooks. If you always loaded it just half full, it would probably be okay though.

Mine is 8" high and 13.5" in diameter and can go 16 hours plus on a single load.

More than one way to skin a cat though . . .or fire a drum.

        So, if I cut it in half (12x24) , it'd be 6" X 48", which would give me a diameter of appx 15 1/4".

I think that would work better.

I agree. And you should be able to hold more charcoal that way too.

I think that would be PERFECT!!

I filled mine full once just to see how long it would go. It lasted 20+ hours at smoking temps. Now even when I do briskets, I only fill it about 3/4 full.
