  • Thermo Question

Gonna add a Tel-Tru 2-1/2" stem to the DBD. What size hole does one need to drill. It looks a 3/4", but want to be sure. Dont want to put several unnessesary holes in it. May just have to cough up the $6 for a mounting kit.

An after thought. Think I'll go with the 3/4" and use conduit locknuts.

crewdawg sounds like you have it coverd. but, 6 bucks for a mounting kit taint bad. unless it is a cheap O that you can make and do better. I have seen some plugs that are hollow and SAE thread that I think could easliy be drilled to the dia you want and make a slit to drop the cable / probe in and the nut / washer should plug it up.

need a larger spatula for early morning road kill removal.

As the venomous south American hissing skunk rat is growing fast and needs larger portions.

For anyone interested in putting a Tru-Tel on their drum, a 3/4" hole saw is the ticket. I also used 2, 1/2" conduit locknuts (.39 cts for 2) on the inside and outside to give it added support. Fits well!

Geoff, Your method is definitely the best move. I went with a bored out 1/2" hole and got it to fit very tight but it is not the best way to do it.

          Yep, 3/4" hole works great.

Better than the 13/16" hole you get if you bump the step bit one last time just to clean up the hole.

The mounting kit is just a flat washer and a nut but I think it's stainless steel. Conduit nut should be fine.

Only thing I would suggest on a drum thermo is I wish I would have went with a 4" stem.

I'm beginning to think I should have gone with the 4"er too. Have one in the BDS and it works well. Will see on the next cook (either this sun or mon).

The Teltru in my UDS is a 2-1/2" stem. Works fine but I'm thinking the temp reading offset may be a bit smaller with a longer stem. Still have to do some math either way I'd imagine.

I wish Teltru would make the BQ300 with a 12" stem so I could use it with the bolt and slide it to the center like the deep fry thermo. The Teltru's dial is easier for me to read.

I have no idea what size hole I ended up drilling. I used a step bit and just kept drilling and trying it until the Tel-Tru threaded right into the drum. It ended up so snug and tight that I don't need a nut on it to hold it in place.

A 4" stem and i guarantee you bend it first time you pull out your fire basket.
Don't ask me how i know this.
The difference between readings on the two are maybe 5 degrees.

                    I'm trying . . .

Planning on a brisket smoke the night of Dec. 4th. Gonna try a method that I'll call The Four L's.

                    1. Light the drum.
                    2. Load the drum.
                    3. Put the Lid on the drum.
                    4. Leave the drum alone.

                    We'll see how it goes.

now that is good. one of the hardest things is to not peep a 100 times and let temps drop. kinda like rice don't touch the lid for 30minutes.

                        I hear ya there.

Darn thing about the drums though is when you start peeking too much, the temps go UP (after the lid goes back on anyways ) then they don't want to come back down.

Even more reason to just leave it alone.
