  • More probe problems?

Whats up with this? The Maverick is throwing me a curve again!
Probed my brisket after 4 hours... Et73 in the point and a cheapo in the flat...
Cheapo is readin 144 and the Mav is readin 188... WTF... theres no way that point is at 188 in 4 hrs. Plugged it in right next to the cheapo...188......So I pulled out yet another cheapo and probed the point...guess what...148...Pulled out the mav probe and hangin in 55 degree air, its readin 103...........crap..... Both cheapo therms are readin 149....

I guess its good to have a back up...or two...

I understand the economics, but for me, after going through 3 of the el cheapos and having them crap out right in the heat of battle, I decided the Thermapen was the way to go in the long run.

Kinda hard to tell from your original post, but for the sake of time, I was under the impression that the Mav & the cheapo went south on ya. Maybe a Thermapen is on your wish list for the upcoming holidays and I hope you get one. The speed & accuracy is unbeatable.

The Thermapen and the ET-73 (or other digital probe thermo) are different tools for different jobs.

Can't leave a Thermapen in a hunk of meat while the smoker is going to monitor temps. So a Thermapen would not solve the problem he is having with the ET-73 probes. Although it is handy to use as a reference point or second opinion.

But it sounded like he already had that covered with the other probe thermos.

I'm well aware that the Thermapen & ET-73 or other probe type therms serve different purposes and that you can't leave a Thermapen in a chunk of meat. After having too many of the therm types crap out on me, I got the Thermapen and pretty much know how long things take to cook. When I feel it's getting close, I start stickin' it with the Thermapen, and go from there. I thinks it's a much easier way for me, plus I have the reliability & speed of the Thermapen. I've just learned to adjust my way of doing it without having some pos take a dump in the middle of a smoke. Different strokes for different folks.

Just checking. Some people don't realize that.

Sounds like a plan. Plus with a Thermapen, it don't take long to check the temp.

I don't have a thermopen.. I actually have never seen one.. but I did order the mavrick on line from amazon great the first time I used it, but then the remote would not go further than like 15 feet... stupid thingy so I still count on my el cheapr accurite for the right temp.. now again I don't have a thermopen... but the mavrick was pretty pricey for me compared to my accurite.. and its still ticking... I do agree having extra thernos is a must especially if your having probs with temps like I did today.. I whipped out all of them to test the smoker chamber cuz she just being such a biach to get to temp, I did realize one of my thermos is toast.. the maverick one, but the other two were spot on! My next one will be an el cheapo!
