As mentioned a few days ago, my two sons ( JC 18, and Justin 20) were to be my teamates for this years annual tune-up tourney.I have the traveling plaque from last year when my son Justin, my buddy Dave and I won it then.
The day started out cool and crisp at 29 degrees with a bit of frost, but the river was in good shape and the boat and crew were well prepared for the day.Justin was really charged up and started getting stuff set up while me and JC sat in the heated cabin and checked out the different flavored doughnuts!Justin has the fishing bug pretty good and it shows because he had the hot hand for sure. His first fish came a few minutes after sun up and was just a couple lbs, but we boxed it anyways. The tourney allows us to weigh-in our 3 biggest fish. Not long after the first one goes into the box, this nice male dandy comes to net.
JC's turn is next and he does a great job, but just a foot or so from the net, the hook pulls out. He is devistated, and we both try to get him to shake it off and get back into the game. Our mission statement for this event was to have fun first as a team, and catch some fish second.
JC finally gets his chance to redeem himself about an hr later, and completes his task with this nice 5 lb hen. Hes holds the fish this way to make his mom laugh. Gotta admitt, it is kinda funny.
Justin hooks and lands two more fish, and says, Dad, you better contribute something old man!
So I get after it, and a few minutes later, I land a decent cromer of my own about 7 lbs.
we end the day with 8 good bites, 7 hook-ups and 6 fish landed. Now most folks might not understand, but these fish are fresh, crome fighters and are full of piss and vinegar when hooked, so to only loose the one with a first timer on board is pretty cool.
Here is the total catch for the day.
we didn't win the tourney, but out of 22 teams we placed second
The first place team was not a member of our chapter, so we did retain the traveling trophy for the second year, and a first as a totally father and sons team.
I am pretty proud of these young men. They did real good against alot of very good anglers. Our 3 fish weighed just over 20 lbs total. The first place team had 23lbs and change.
Thanks for checkin out our adventure.
