irishteabear 02-18-2009, 05:54 AM Looks like you had fun. Lake trout are fun to catch.
curious aardvark 02-18-2009, 06:00 AM wow - now that's some neat fishing.
Excellent fish too.
So what do you use for bait ?
And given that bugger all light penetrates the snow and ice - why'd you get up so early ;-)
So you gonna smoke them whole or fillet first ?
Texas-Hunter 02-18-2009, 08:14 AM Beautiful fish erain... That should be some great eats..
wutang 02-18-2009, 08:20 AM Great pics. Looks like you had a nice haul.

for bait used big sucker minnows. 6-8 inches long
reason so early is well thats how long it takes to get where we want to go, aint much for trails.
them fish will have to be split open, they are way to thick to get brine penetration and also be easier to make sure smoked til done. also opening them up will allow better smoke penetration which suits my taste just fine.
Slanted88 02-18-2009, 11:28 AM Just awesome! Great pic's!
Capt Dan 02-18-2009, 12:27 PM You could always steak them into 2-3 inch steaks. I have done that with trout and whities before, works pretty well. I try to interlock the ribs so they are not out in the open, better if the rib skin touches the rib skin of the next steak. Know what I mean. That way when they are done, just spread the centers open backwards and they break apart at the backbone, and alot of the rib bones and pin bones will pull out of the meat and stay on the skeleton.
I love smoked lake trout, good and oily! You are a lucky sum beetch!:thumb:
solar 02-18-2009, 12:53 PM Wow erain nice pictures and fish!! Looks like you had a great time, and picked a great day to do it. I could smell the exhaust from the picture of your snowmobile getting fired up. I haven't ice fished in a long long time, wanted to do some when I was up in Michigan last month but just couldn't find the time. All I ever caught ice fishing were Bluegills and Sunfish, never knew you could haul up Trout like that out of a frozen lake. This boy has been living down south way to long.
Bbqgoddess 02-18-2009, 04:21 PM Wow E!!

thks dan, i cut steaks almost to the dorsal fin, then i took the back half and ran the knife down the backbone on both sides, so i ended up a buncha nice steaks and some nice sized fillets. best a both i guess. will do pics this w/e.
