Seems the cold is all over the country last few days.Average high 33 degree here last 4 days....
Built this leaf compost pile 3 days ago...I use dehydrated alfalfa meal as the nitrogen(heat Boost)....Luckily i have 3 finished piles from last few years and only need one pile this year....Leaves are shredded, but top ones were(whole) from around the pile.
Pile is 24'x4 fencing in a circle...The black is breathable landscaping fabric for keeping the compost in as it gets finer...

I could use about 20 years worth of that here for a garden! I have clay and alkali (10 acres of it).:noidea:

3 days in that kind of temp? And alfalfa meal was the boost..The end product was amazing..Was all the finished product from the last three piles plus this?

Alex, you crack me up! Isn't that like saying "Tricked out No. 2 pencil".
Seriously, you and your garden are beyond amazing. The trouble is, I could have a barge full of your compost, and I would still kill crabgrass...I guess I will just have to watch in amazement. Bravo to you for doing it right. :thumb:

Great looking compost material Bud!
I layer the alfalfa meal every 6 inches of the pile...I will need to water in a few weeks or when the temp goes below 100 degree..
30-1 ratio of carbon(leaves) to Nitrogen(alfalfa) is the best ratio and i have figured how to hit it about right,so pile goes right to work.
That pile shredded was from just one of the piles like i started above and was started january 2009.I will add more leaves to the fresh pile soon. This ways i get alot more finished product. If i leave that new pile alone it would drop down to half of cage in few weeks and i want alot of compost so i keep adding more for a few weeks...I usually end up with less then 50% of added to piles original size- double shredded.
I add thousands of earthworms from my veggie compost to the finished piles.I add calcitic limestone to some of compost(a year in advance) that alkaline liking plants like-Peppers etc...

Dang Alex!
That is cool... I told the kids we would start one.. just dont have a clue how to.. I am gonna take a compost for dummies/blondes class!
10 degree hotter and 2 days later and still below 32 degree...
Prolly..could do a primer on all the compost and save folk some money...
Did a complete heat profile years ago published in some farking college-course...I hate to type, but it might be educational....
