  • Looking for a GOOD remote thermo

OK, so saturday I attempted to smoke my pulled pork. Come to find out my remote thermo is now off by almost 60 degrees. Couldn't find my regular instant read one, so I ended up having to use a candy thermo to get it done.

This is my second remote thermo to go out in as many years. I'm not impressed with having to buy a new one every year. Is this normal? If so I'm just going to stick with the instant read stuff. I try to take care of my probes, no dishwasher. Keep them out of water. Hand wash just the prob when done, and be careful with water. Try to keep kinks out of the wire. When I'm not using them they hang on the side of the fridge with the prob laying on top so there's no pull on the wire. Yet despite my best efforts they still go south way faster than I think they should.

Can anyone recommend a decent (e.g. QUALITY) remote thermo that will last more than a year? And doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

    Thanks.

First one was a maverick. Not sure what model. It only lasted 7 months. The last one was a Oneida I think, lasted a little more than a year.

Hmmm.... I have a fancy-dancy tire pyrometer for measuring tire temps. Similar to this one:

I wonder if I could find a longer probe for it and use that instead of buying a new remote themo.

I've had the Maverick ET-7 for over 10 years and never had a glitch using it, in the oven, in the smoker and over the campfire. I plan on buying a ET-73 soon to use with it in my smoker.

Maverick ET-73. Best 40 bux I ever spent. Yes, some probes will go bad on ya' eventually, butt that's normal. You can get replacements, with the longer, heavy duty cord, on ebay for a reasonable price.

I have two ET-73's, with another on the way.

Alternative: If you get to the point where you trust yourself with no probes during the cook, then get a Thermapen. This is an awesome piece of equipment, that is dead nutz accurate and last a long time...

I have a couple Taylors and other than the direct sunlight issue, I have no problems.

I too love my Thermapens. My red one is a micro second faster than my white one if that helps.

LOL, yep same here. I have a couple of small blocks of wood I set on the Taylors display if I can't keep it in the shade. It was quite a surprise the first time I walked up to them to check a temp and the entire display was blacked out.

Replacement probes are pretty reasonably prices. They're not remote though nor do they have a low temp alarm. But if I'm going to be outside anyway, I'll use them instead of the ET-73 sometimes.
